Quick Verdict

Fourways is one of Johannesburg's most liveable northern suburbs for families and professionals who value access to good schools and retail. The trade-off is real: traffic on Witkoppen and William Nicol is brutal during peak hours, rentals are not cheap, and safety varies sharply between gated estates and open streets. If you can afford a secure complex and have access to a car, Fourways delivers.

Suitability

Who it suits

FamiliesGood fit

Top-tier private and public schools within 5km. Secure estates with communal green space. Strong community feel.

Young professionalsConditional

Great location and lifestyle access, but rental prices are high for singles. Consider Lonehill or Sunninghill for better value.

RetireesGood fit

Quiet, established, with good medical facilities nearby. Life Rights developments available in the area.

InvestorsGood fit

Consistent rental demand from corporate tenants and families. Good long-term capital growth in quality estates.

Budget rentersNot ideal

Fourways is not a budget suburb. If you are looking for under R9,000/month, you will have significantly more options in Midrand, Roodepoort, or Randburg.

Lifestyle

What it's actually like to live here

โ€œWhere families settleโ€

Fourways has grown from a sleepy northern outpost into one of Johannesburg's most self-contained suburbs. The Fourways Mall, Montecasino, and Leroy Merlin anchor a retail and entertainment strip that means you rarely need to leave the area. There are parks, coffee shops, and running routes, particularly around the Douglasdale and Lonehill green belts. The suburb attracts a mix of South African professionals, expat families, and long-term Joburg residents. The pace is suburban rather than urban. You need a car for almost everything. Neighbourhood WhatsApp groups are active and engaged. Load shedding has been a real frustration for many residents, with some areas more affected than others depending on which Eskom substation supplies the block.

Safety Narrative

Safety in Fourways is a tale of two suburbs. Inside the gated estates and access-controlled complexes, residents consistently report feeling safe, with professional security, CCTV, and regular patrols. Open streets in areas like Douglasdale and Broadacres carry higher risk and residents report opportunistic crime including vehicle break-ins and armed robberies. The Fourways SAPS precinct covers a large geographic area. Avoid walking after dark in open streets. Within a quality estate, Fourways is among the safer options in northern Johannesburg.

Getting Around

Transport and commuting

Car Dependency
๐Ÿš—High car dependency
Key Routes
  • Witkoppen Road (N14)
  • William Nicol Drive
  • Newtonian Drive
  • Cedar Road

Fourways is a car-dependent suburb. There is no meaningful public transport infrastructure serving the area, and the Gautrain does not extend to Fourways (the nearest station is Rivonia, approximately 14km away). Witkoppen Road and William Nicol Drive are the primary arteries and both become heavily congested between 07:00 and 09:00 and again from 16:30 to 19:00 on weekdays. Budget 45 to 90 minutes to reach Sandton CBD in peak traffic. Ride-hailing services (Uber and Bolt) are reliable and widely used. The area is not walkable for daily errands.
